Does Xpdf, Open Office or KOffice allow you to open pdf files in edit mode? I was pretty sure that one of these does. I think you still need to have ImageMagick installed because it is used on the backend. Gentoo Linux and webcams

I've got a Gentoo Linux server at home. It isn't running XWindows but it is running Apache 2. Currently I have a Logitech Quickcam Pro 4000 webcam setup on it running the PWC drivers and palantar software to serve up the cam pages. For a peek at it go to: http://jserver.dnsalias.net/GardenCam/index2.html Or http://jserver.dnsalias.net/GardenCam/index.html for a video feed and watch the grass grow. I'm not happy with the quality of the picture. The colors are off, the picture is washed out and faded, and the resolution is horrible. Is anyone else currently running a webcam? Does anyone have suggestions on something better or someway to improve picture quality?

OT: Apple and Intel

Guess it's sort of the bombshell of today: Apple is dropping IBM chips and moving to Intel. Live coverage of the Job's keynote is available here: http://live.macobserver.com/article/2005/06/wwdc2005_keynote.shtml He said that they've been able to compile OS X on an intel chip for five years in preparation for this move. New Version of Debian released

MySQL Question

I've been trying to figure this out, but have been coming up blank. For some reason, I can't figure out the right google term to use, and the MySQL books I have don't really address this. I'm working with a website that will have many, many pieces of text I need to store in the database. Most of these texts will be less than 10,000 Characters, while a few will could be as great as 100,000 characters or more. I won't be able to know ahead of time. The Scheme's I've come up with are as follows: Use LongText or MediumText data type for all articles. My concern is that those majority of articles that are only < 10,000 will bloat the database. Please excuse my ignorance in the data storage techniques if this isn't right. The other way is that as articles are stored in different tables based on their character count. I don't like this method because it would mean have three tables to store the same type of data, and I would need to reference that in another table. Anyone have thoughts on this? Thanks, Josh

The problem is that it's a 120G disk and it has about 30G of data I'd rather not have to migrate on and off of another disk (which I could do).

You might try to run QTParted from a Knoppix disk or other LiveCD. I've had what seems like a similar problem with Windows or Partition Image (by Power Quest, the Partition Magic people), not liking the beginning or ending place of partitions created in Linux. Usually the error I get is that the CHS (cylinder, head, sector) and LBA (logical block addressing) figures don't match. I haven't researched why this happens though. I've alternatively let Windows fix it and both Oses were happy or ignore it with no ill effects. I imagine it is the info written to the partition table on the drive that is not liked.

"Bad Geometry"

I tried to get FC3 to install on my basement Gentoo box today, and it popped up error messages about failure to probe partition geometry. I have to presume this is an attempt by RedHat's proprietary formatting tool to understand the partitions on my main hard drive. These were created by fdisk (2.12i), which is a pretty standard tool. Gentoo hasn't had any trouble working with the disk, and I'm not sure why Fedora would, but it won't complete the install. I imagine it might work if I used gentoo's fdisk to delete all the partitions, but I want to keep the main partition (/) which has a lot of data on it. I guess I can just wait for FC4 to make it out, but it's frustrating. RH used to offer to allow you to use cfdisk or fdisk (I forget) instead of it's proprietary formatter, which never did work worth a darn.
